Currently in the studio writing new material. It feels good.
One High Five’s singer/songwriter, David Sauer, turned inward to navigate surrounding chaos. Their latest single, “Nerd Wax” inspired by Nietzsche’s theory, "he who has a why to live can bear almost any how." The results are front-row seats to discovering strength and learning what is important to your life.
“I’ve been eating mental vegetables,” David says. “I'm curious about fate vs destiny and identifying personal weaknesses to gain control when it seems there is none. It’s been exciting and borderline fun."
Nerd Wax sinks clenched teeth curiosity into pulsating hot lava indie-rock. Grinding fuzz bass and bombastic drums propel the listener through playful twists on tempo, energy, and mood. “For me, the music reflects both the slog and freedom that come from personal discovery, ”David reveals.
Their latest album, Beardlip (2019) posits an intriguing duality of playful, almost unflinchingly, upbeat indie rock juxtaposed with heartfelt, honest, and literate lyrics. The album spans raved-up, neo-1960s garage rock, replete with organs and exuberant lead guitar (“Noismaker”); raucously catchy, indie rock with unexpected dynamic twists and turns (“Fast Food”); and personal reflection tucked away in quirky neo-new wave pop rock ( “Bones Of My Ancestors”). Among other terrain, the 12-song album also traverses stun-gun indie-funk, and artfully-warped rockabilly. Beardlip was mixed by Jonny Bell (Crystal Antlers, Hanni El Kathib), and mastered by Carl Saff (Sub Pop, Matador Records).
In 2021, One High Five released a live EP recorded at Bridge City Sessions, recorded during the Beardlip tour. The band has self-produced two tours with festival performances at CMJ and Broke LA and had the song “How We Enjoyed Ourselves” featured in the horror movie, The Lost Lake.
